A fabric coaster is a small, useful textile piece that helps catch everyday mug rings, drips, and condensation.
With this method, you can turn one of our raw edge appliqué designs into a simple sewn coaster using a finished appliqué top, a soft middle layer, backing fabric, and a neat topstitched edge.
This is easier than making a full mini quilt because there is:
- no binding
- no hanging method
- no large quilt sandwich
- no complicated quilting required
This tutorial begins after you have already made your raw edge appliqué top using your Vivid Stitch Art pattern.
What Is an Appliqué Fabric Coaster?
An appliqué fabric coaster is a small sewn fabric piece with a decorative appliqué design on the front.
It usually includes:
- a decorative appliqué front
- a soft middle layer
- a backing fabric
- stitching around the appliqué shapes
- topstitching around the outer edge
Our version uses your raw edge appliqué design as the front of the coaster.
Unlike a mini quilt wall hanging, this coaster is meant to be used flat on a table, desk, coffee bar, or bedside table.
Important Safety Note
This project is a fabric drink coaster, not a potholder, trivet, hot pad, or heat-protective item.
Use it for:
- mugs
- cups
- glasses
- condensation
- small everyday drink drips
Do not use it for:
- hot pans
- hot dishes
- cookware
- oven items
Even if some sewing tutorials include potholder versions, this VSA tutorial is for a decorative drink coaster only.
Which Size Should I Use?
For VSA Mini Patterns, use the Small size for a coaster.
A finished coaster around 5″ x 5″ is a practical size for most mugs and glasses.
For this tutorial, trim the appliqué front to:
5.5″ x 5.5″ before sewing
After sewing, turning, and topstitching, the coaster will finish at about:
5″ x 5″
Materials You’ll Need
- Finished Small raw edge appliqué top
- Backing fabric, cut 5.5″ x 5.5″
- Low-loft cotton batting or fusible fleece, cut about 5″ x 5″
- Lightweight sewable fusible web, used when making the appliqué
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Ruler
- Pins or sewing clips
- Iron and pressing surface
- Turning tool, chopstick, or blunt point turner
Optional:
- coordinating thread for decorative topstitching
- fabric marker for marking the turning opening
- extra fabrics if you want to make a set of four
Before You Begin
Your appliqué top should already be fused according to your pattern instructions.
For any coaster that will be handled or washed, use sewable lightweight fusible web and stitch the appliqué edges. Do not use heavy-duty no-sew fusible for this project.
Before assembling the coaster, make sure:
- the appliqué pieces are fused securely
- the raw edges are stitched
- the design is centered
- the front fabric is flat and pressed
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Start with the Finished Appliqué Top
Begin with your Small appliqué design made on a larger working background square.
Do not worry if the background fabric is larger than the final coaster size. That extra fabric makes it easier to work neatly.
Check the design and remove any loose threads.
Step 2: Edge-Stitch the Appliqué
Before assembling the coaster, stitch around the exposed raw edges of the appliqué pieces.
You can use:
- straight stitch about 1/8″ inside the edge
- narrow zigzag stitch
- blanket stitch, for a more decorative look
For beginners, a simple straight stitch is usually the easiest and cleanest option.
This step helps secure the appliqué because a coaster will be handled, moved, washed, and used with cups.
Step 3: Trim the Appliqué Front to Size
Trim the appliqué front to 5.5″ x 5.5″.
Keep the design centered.
Try to leave at least 1/4″ seam allowance outside the visible design area so the appliqué does not get caught too close to the edge when you sew the coaster together.
Step 4: Prepare the Backing and Middle Layer
Cut:
- one backing square: 5.5″ x 5.5″
- one batting or fusible fleece square: about 5″ x 5″
Cutting the middle layer slightly smaller helps reduce bulky seams.
If you are using fusible fleece, fuse it to the wrong side of the backing fabric, centered, following the product instructions.
If you are using regular low-loft cotton batting, keep it as a separate layer.
Step 5: Stack the Layers
Layer the coaster like this:
- Place the appliqué front right side up.
- Place the backing fabric on top right side down, so the appliqué front and backing are right sides together.
- Place the batting or fusible fleece on the outside/top of the stack.
The appliqué design will be hidden inside the stack during sewing. That is correct.
Clip or pin the layers together around the edges.
Step 6: Sew Around the Coaster
Sew around the coaster using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Leave a 2″ opening on one side so you can turn the coaster right side out later.
Backstitch at the beginning and end of the opening to keep the seam secure.
Pivot at the corners with the needle down.
Do not sew the opening closed yet.
Step 7: Trim the Corners
Trim the corners carefully to reduce bulk.
Cut diagonally across each corner, close to the seam but not through the stitches.
Avoid trimming too much near the 2″ opening. You will need that seam allowance in the next steps so the raw edges can fold inward neatly.
This helps the corners turn out more smoothly.
Step 8: Turn the Coaster Right Side Out
Turn the coaster right side out through the 2″ opening.
Use your fingers or a blunt turning tool to gently push out the corners.
Do not use anything sharp, because it can poke through the fabric.
The turning opening will still be open after this step. That is normal. In the next step, you’ll fold the raw edges inward, press them flat, and close the opening with topstitching.
Step 9: Press Flat and Fold the Opening Inward
After turning the coaster right side out, gently shape the corners with your fingers or a blunt turning tool.
Press the coaster flat.
At the opening, fold the raw edges inward so they line up with the sewn side seam. Press well and hold the opening closed with clips or pins.
The opening will be closed in the next step when you topstitch around the coaster.
Step 10: Topstitch Around the Edge
Topstitch around all four sides, about 1/8″ to 1/4″ from the outer edge.
This step does two things:
- closes the turning opening
- gives the coaster a neat finished edge
Sew slowly as you pass across the folded opening to make sure both folded edges are caught in the stitching.
You can use matching thread for a subtle look or contrasting thread for a decorative finish.
Optional Step: Add Light Quilting
For the simplest coaster, stop after topstitching.
If you want a slightly more quilted look, add just a few light quilting lines after the coaster is turned, pressed, and topstitched.
Good options:
- one or two straight lines
- gentle wavy lines
- echo stitching around the rainbow
- simple background quilting
Keep it light. Too much dense quilting can make a small coaster stiff or wavy.
Optional: Bound Mini Quilt Coaster
If you want your coaster to look more like a tiny quilt, you can also finish it with binding.
That method is closer to a mini quilt:
- Make the appliqué top.
- Edge-stitch the appliqué.
- Layer backing, batting, and top.
- Quilt the layers.
- Square up the coaster.
- Add binding around the edges.
This takes longer, but gives a polished quilted look.
For this beginner tutorial, the turn-and-topstitch method is the simplest.
How to Use or Display Your Appliqué Coasters
Option 1: Use One with Your Favorite Mug
Place your coaster under a mug, teacup, or glass on your desk, coffee table, or bedside table.
Option 2: Make a Set of Four
Coasters are perfect for batch sewing.
Make four matching coasters from the same design, or use different fabric colors for each one.
Option 3: Tie Them as a Gift Set
Stack the coasters and tie them with ribbon or cotton twill tape.
Add a small gift tag for a handmade housewarming, teacher, hostess, or holiday gift.
Option 4: Style Them on a Coffee Bar
Keep a small stack near your coffee machine, tea tray, or mug shelf.
This makes them both useful and decorative.
Option 5: Display One on a Small Easel
If you make a coaster you love too much to use, place it on a tiny tabletop easel as mini textile art.
Care Instructions
Because this coaster is sewn and topstitched, it can be gently cleaned.
Recommended care:
- spot clean when possible
- machine wash cold on gentle if needed
- use mild detergent
- avoid bleach and fabric softener
- air dry flat
- press from the back if needed
- do not iron directly over the appliqué
If the coaster wrinkles after washing, press it gently with a pressing cloth.
Coaster vs. Mug Rug
A coaster is for one cup or glass.
A mug rug is larger and usually has room for a mug plus a snack.
Choose a coaster if you want a quick, small project.
Choose a mug rug if you want a larger desk mat or snack mat.
